Stroller Recall After A Dozen Kids Lose Fingertips In Hinges

One million baby strollers are being recalled beginning Tuesday after 12 children had their fingertips amputated in the stroller hinges. T

he strollers are made by Maclaren USA of Connecticut and have been sold in the U.S since 1999.

Maclaren will send parents protective covers for the hinges.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has an announcement on its Web site though does not give specifics about the injuries suffered by children.

The CPSC in an announcement on its Web site says “The stroller’s hinge mechanism poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller.”

So far 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller’s hinge with 12 of them losing fingertips.

The stroller is made in China.

The recall includes models: Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers with the word “Maclaren” printed on the stroller including the - Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

Consumers can contact Maclaren USA Inc. of South Norwalk, Conn. At their Web site To receive a free repair kit. The strollers were sold at Babies”R”Us, Target and other retailers from 1999 through November 2009 at a cost between $100 and $360.

CPSC is still interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this product recall or involve a different hazard with the same product. It is asking consumers who've experienced injuries to visit: https://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx

Betsy Brody, 43, of Murray Hill New York, tells the New York Daily News she shelled out more than $170 for her Maclaren Triumph. “It’s very upsetting” she said. Other parents say the Maclaren is the best stroller they’ve ever had. #
