Maytag Corporation of Newton, Iowa is voluntarily recalling about 1.6 million refrigerators that could present a fire hazard. So far there have been 16 incidents in the kitchen ranging from smoke to fire damage.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says this is the nation's largest refrigerator recall.

Brands include: Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Maytag, Performa by Maytag and Crosley side-by-side and top freezer refrigerators. They were sold from January 2001 through January 2004, reports Associated Press.

Your refrigerator is not involved if it has a bottom freezer.   The cost was $350 to $1,600 and they come in black, white, stainless steel and bisque.

Overheating can occur when there is an electrical failure in the relay that switches on the refrigerator’s compressor. Maytag has so far had to fix 41 bad ignition incidents.  Maytag’s toll free number is 866-533-9817. Maytag is a unit of Whirlpool.

Consumers should not return the items to the stores that sold them but should call Maytag for a free in-home repair.
