Under new state regulations, Masschusetts will be able to have medical clinics inside pharmacies

Expect a change in the way health care is delivered for relatively simple medical ailments in Massachusetts.

You may soon be able to cut out the middleman, your doctor, and go directly to the source of drugs that many use to quell symptoms of poison ivy.

New regulations approved in Massachusetts will allow pharmacies to operate medical clinics to treat a sore throat, a cold or ear infection.

Over the next three years, CVS Corp. has plans to open 50 clinics inside Greater Boston pharmacies.

The state Department of Public Health regulations limit the number of a patients’ visits to the clinics and they must notify their primary care doctor to coordinate care. Children under the age of two will not be treated. Translation services must be available.

The pharmacy-clinics have to tighten their sanitation practices to health care standards and  will have to create a waiting room to prevent infection. They will be operated by nurse practitioners, not doctors but regulations state that an M.D. must be available by telephone.

Eventually the expanded pharmacy-clinics could be found in hospitals and homeless shelters.

CVS will open the clinics through MinuteClinic, its subsidiary already operating in about 24 states. #
