A website written by moms for moms has turned its investigative skills into the classroom. Mom•Logic reveals that one in five kids surveyed has witnessed sex in school.
During an appearance on Friday’s Today Show, Sabrina Weill, editor-in-chief of Mom•Logic introduced portions of a three and a half minute video that captures teenagers discussing what they’ve seen inside private and public schools.
"One couple at my school gets it on during lunch right near where my friends and I sit. Especially when the girl wears a skirt. It's pretty unappetizing, especially when I'm trying to eat."
- Aubrey, 15, Seattle
Who is having sex in school? The teenagers say it crosses all stratas of teen life from straight A students to jocks, geeks, cheerleaders and popular kids.
“Popular kids on popular kids because they think if they do have sex maybe they’ll become popular,”
- Darren, age 13.
Where are they having sex in school? If you believe the teens everywhere. Closets, classrooms, projector rooms and in the stairwell.
“I go to a private catholic high school and my friends tell me they have sex in the chapel all the time because its dark and no one uses it during school hours,”
- Alexa age 17.
“Girls and guys in the stairway hooking up with each other and guys touching their chest and girls touching their private parts,” says Darren.
Momlogic.com is run by Weill, the former editor-in-chief of Seventeen Magazine.
The author of several books on teen sex she says it’s not uncommon for half of teenagers to have sex before the end of high school. But when she and other moms heard that teens were having sexual encounters in school they did a “momvestigation” to find out what was happening.
On her website she says, “Over the past few months, we've been hearing news reports of kids having sex in school: in the classroom, the school bathroom, even on the bus. As these stories became more and more frequent, we began to wonder if these were isolated incidences or part of a disturbing national trend. We consulted our friends at Cosmo Girl and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and they'd been wondering the same thing. So we decided to do a national survey on sex in schools—the first study of its kind to be conducted in the United States. We surveyed kids age 12-17 from around the country.”
The parameters of the survey are unclear from the website.
Parents might want to know how many teens were interviewed and how were questions posed. That would be important to know when interviewing teenagers and middle schoolers who are notorious for gossip and rumors.
It’s also unclear whether the teens featured on the video have actually witnessed the sex acts or are passing on hearsay.
Perhaps recognizing the glaring questions the video and this “momvestigation” poses, Monday, the site promises to have more video clips from young people who say they have personally witnesses sexual encounters inside school.
