It sounds like a skit on Saturday Night Live mocking our modern health care system.  But this happened to a Staten Island, New York woman last month.

The New York Daily News is reporting that Barbara Antonelli, 76, was in her doctor’s office complaining of chest pains. He determined she had suffered a heart attack and called the ambulance.

But before it takes off the receptionist from Staten Island Physician Practice insists Antonelli pay the $5 co-pay to the doctor’s office.

Antonelli, is on the gurney with breathing tubes attached and has to rustle through her purse for the $5 before the ambulance can leave.

"You can't even get a book of stamps for that price. I was outraged. It was the most heartless, unthinkable thing to do. They were putting money on top of a person's life," she tells the paper.

Her doctor, Dr. Jonathan Okum called an ambulance from Richmond University Medical Center. The receptionist was from Dr. Okum’s office. She is not being named but will be reprimanded her boss says.  Dr. Jack D’Angelo from Staten Island Physician Practice says her actions were “inappropriate.”

Antonelli, a widow, has since recovered from the heart attack. But she has gone public.

"This wouldn't have happened if they'd taught the employees," said Antonelli. "They should have known the rules. I could have dropped dead," she tells the paper

Staten Island Physician Practice's (SIPP) slogan is "We're all about patients". #
